Corolla Spacio

This is an August 2001 Toyota Corolla Spacio X G with 120,000 km / approximately 75,000 miles. It was purchased at auction in Japan as a grade 4 car with interior B and exterior B scores, and the condition absolutely reflects that.

This is one of those cars that makes a lot more sense once you spend some time around it. It’s basically Corolla simplicity and reliability packaged into a surprisingly practical little people mover.

It’s powered by Toyota’s 1ZZ-FE and an automatic transmission, and with only about 75,000 miles, this is a very low-mileage example of a drivetrain we already know very well here in the US.

The condition is excellent for the age. The body is very straight, the paint presents extremely well, and the interior has been exceptionally well kept. This is easily one of the nicest parts of the car — it simply doesn’t feel like a 25-year-old vehicle when you sit inside it.

The really fun part is how much Toyota managed to fit into such a small package.

It has a stowaway third row, so it can seat up to seven people despite being barely larger than a normal compact car. It also has one of my favorite weird JDM features: a factory refrigerated/cooling compartment between the front seats. I tested it myself and it works properly.

Mechanically, the car drives extremely well and really doesn’t need much.

Before sale, I’m installing a brand-new set of Toyo Extensa A/S II tires. I’ve also ordered OEM Toyota valve cover components and the timing chain tensioner components to address the common oil seepage areas on the 1ZZ before handing it over to the next owner.

Other than that, this is genuinely a car I’d be comfortable getting in and taking on a road trip.

That’s really what I like about this Spacio. It’s unusual enough that almost nobody here has seen one, but underneath it all it’s still a Corolla: simple, economical, practical, easy to drive, and based around a drivetrain with excellent parts availability in the US.

If you’re looking for something genuinely different without signing yourself up for the ownership experience of something obscure or difficult to maintain, this is a pretty compelling little car.
